Prague is a beautiful city with its classic red rooftops. We arrived to the city via train from Krakow and we stayed in a lovely apartment outside the city walls. By our arrival to Prague we were tired and needed time to rest. We had been constantly moving for a month. The weather was dreary and we did not see the sun during our entire stay. The city was incredibly crowded with tourist.

All that being said, we did get out and explore some of the sites. Our first stop was the Jewish Quarter of the city. We spent a day touring several of the synagogues spanning hundreds of years. The synagogues were elaborate and very beautiful. It was interesting to read about the history which was primarily centered around WW2 in the synagogues that we visited. One in particular told the history of a concentration camp nearby called Terezin. It was a propaganda camp used primarily to show the Red Cross how well the prisoners were being treated in the concentration camps. The camp had musicians and artist on site to perform for the Red Cross visitors but the conditions were horrific and most of the prisoners were transported to death camps. There was an exhibit of children’s artwork from the camp showing day to day life, most of the art showed the violence that occurred daily.

In the same synagogue, the names of families from Prague that were arrested and deported are written on the walls, most of the walls are covered with names. The names are still being added today. In addition, we visited the Old Jewish Cemetery. It holds roughly 100,000 graves from 1439-1787!

We climbed the hill to the castle, visited the Charles Bridge and walked around the Old Town. It was very beautiful. It was also nice to take a break, cook and simply do life after the busyness of January. We probably need to revisit Prague when the sun is shining 😊.
